Museum of Fishing and Smeltery
Fire and water are the main elements of Peitz's history. The city is both a fortress with an own smeltery and fishing town in long-lasting tradition. Since 1364 Peitz was an exclave of Brandenburg. A island of Brandenburg in Bohemia and later in Saxony. The fortress tower, moat and even the carp ponds were built by margrave Johann of Küstrin to defend the town against aggressors. The smeltery of Peitz, built in the middle of the 16th century has the oldest fully functional foundry in Germany. Next door the Museum of Fishery presents dioramas, fish tanks, an old barge and different fish traps to show the history of fishing and fish farming in Brandenburg.
