Museum of Whittawer
Since the 17th century whittawers played an important role for handcraft of Doberlug-Kirchhain. Thanks to the soft water of the river “Kleine Elster”, whittawers made finest leather under hard conditions for about 300 years. Today the Museum of Whittawer presents the tradition and history of the whittawer handcraft. It is the only museum of whittawer in Europe. In an old tanner house from 1753 the museum shows how they made finest leather about 1900. The technical exhibition demonstrates the industrial processing of leather. See an interesting collection of different leathers and coats from all around the world – from mouse to elephant.
