Gasworks
Vis-à-vis to the famous Neustadt stud and easy to find thanks to the gasometer is the technical monument Gasworks. It is one of the last Gasworks, which produced gas in the conventional way. On so called horizontally retort furnaces coal was heated to generate the gas. Till the Gasworks was closed in 1980 it was one of the oldest coal degasification works still producing. See the old equipment from 1903 and different gas-powered household articles like a gas-powered hair iron to make the hair curly or a bathtub, warmed from its bottom. The collection of the museum contains gas ovens, gas meter readers, gas lamps and other exhibits. A part of the exhibition presents the history of the quarter “Spiegelberg” in Neustadt and its mirror factory.
